What I learned from Ms. Su was a profound grasp of professional communication skills that have been incredibly beneficial in my career. She highlighted the importance of both verbal communication and non-verbal signals, like body language and how we present ourselves. A vital lesson she shared was the necessity of dressing well and being presentable, which she believed was essential for how we are viewed in the professional realm.

I remember that each morning, we had to wear professional clothing, and Ms. Su took this very seriously. She would carefully inspect our outfits, providing helpful feedback and pointing out if we weren’t dressed appropriately. This focus on detail fostered a sense of responsibility and pride in our appearance. It was about more than just looking sharp; it was about conveying confidence and respect for ourselves and those around us.

Even now, I make it a priority to dress appropriately for work, a habit I owe directly to Ms. Su’s guidance. I can still hear her saying, “No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, and show up.” This saying has stuck with me, reminding me that our outward appearance can greatly affect our mindset and the impressions we create with others.

I had the privilege of being a student in Ms. Susila’s “Excellent Customer Service” course over a decade ago, and I can say without hesitation that she left an indelible mark on both my academic and personal life. From the first day of class, her passion for teaching and her wealth of professional experience were immediately apparent. Her expertise in customer service was not just theoretical; it was enriched by her real-world experience, which she expertly wove into every lecture. She made complex concepts feel both accessible and engaging by providing practical examples from her own career.

What truly set Ms. Susila apart, however, was her unwavering dedication to her students. Her commitment didn’t end at the classroom door. She took the time to get to know each of us, understanding our strengths, weaknesses, and unique challenges. In moments of personal or academic difficulty, she was always there with a listening ear and a thoughtful solution, offering guidance and support whenever needed. Whether it was helping us with coursework or simply lending a word of encouragement, she went above and beyond to ensure that we succeeded.

Being in her care group was so delightful. As international students, we sometimes found ourselves far from home during holidays and special occasions. Ms. Susila never let us feel alone. She took it upon herself to invite us to holiday meals, bringing together a sense of family and community that made us feel at home, even in a foreign country. These gatherings were not just about food; they were about sharing warmth, laughter, and building lasting friendships.

Her care for her students extended far beyond the professional realm. To many of us, she was not just a teacher but a mentor, a confidant, and, at times, even a mother figure. Her genuine concern for our well-being and her ability to make each student feel valued and loved was a testament to her exceptional character.Her impact was immeasurable, and I will forever cherish the time spent in her class and the lessons she taught me, both inside and outside the classroom. Ms. Susila is truly a remarkable educator, and I am fortunate to have been one of her students.

Ms Susila was one of my best and favourite lecturers. She is sociable, knowledgeable and very caring and loving teacher. She always ready to help her students whenever the students need her no matter ex-students or current students. I was a student from Laos. I studied tourism management programme at The Tourism Academy @Sentosa, Year 2010-2011.

Ms. Susila was my care person during my study in The Tourism Academy @Sentosa, and she taught me a few subjects. I still remember the lesson on the service excellence class, she said that ” Don’t be upset when the customers get mad with you, it is about your job, not your personality”, that helped me to calm down during the operation work, get me on track quickly when this situation happened and I do transfer this thought to my own students in Laos. Besides lessons, she also inspired and guided me during my living in Singapore by gathering the caregroup to make the members more united, have extra activities such as Bollywood class, doing a show of end semester. Apart from that, we did explore Singapore food, culture and more.

Besides the subjects taught by Ms. Susila, how to be a kind and amazing person especially as a young kid who was trying to figure things out.

To be completely honest, I don’t remember much about the subjects I learned in school. It had been many (many) years since my last class with Ms. Susila. I do, however, remember the way she made me feel. As a kid who was happy-go-lucky, carefree, and yet still trying to figure out life, I remember the kindness, warmth, support that Ms. Susila showed me. 

Looking back, it became clear to me what a blessing it was – for a kid, somewhat lost, to have such a kind and assuring teacher in his/her life.
